New Jersey Solar Incentive Programs
The Successor Solar Incentive (SuSI) ADI replaced the original SREC-I program. For every 1,000 kWh (1 MWh) your system generates, you receive $77 in program payments for 15 years. The rate was reduced from $85 to $77/MWh for registrations received on or after July 27, 2026, by BPU Order of May 21, 2026 (Docket QO26030096). Earlier registrations keep $85/MWh. ADI payments are made quarterly through the NJ Clean Energy Marketplace and are in addition to your net metering bill savings.
- New Jersey property served by a regulated utility (JCP&L, PSE&G, Atlantic City Electric, or Rockland Electric)
- System ≤5 MW (residential systems almost always qualify)
- System interconnected and registered on the NJ Clean Energy Marketplace
- Owner-occupied or rented; both homeowner and third-party-owned systems qualify
New Jersey maintains full 1:1 net metering. Every kWh you export to the grid earns the same credit as if you had bought it from the utility. Monthly surplus credits roll forward. At the end of each 12-month period, any remaining credit is paid out at the utility's avoided cost of wholesale power, not the retail rate. NEM savings are separate from and in addition to your ADI (SuSI) payments.
Under N.J.S.A. 54:32B-8.40, solar energy equipment is exempt from New Jersey sales and use tax. On a $24,000 system, this saves approximately $1,590 upfront. The exemption is applied by your installer at the point of sale, no application is required.
Under N.J.S.A. 54:4-3.113, renewable energy systems used for producing electricity or heat are fully exempt from property tax. This is a statewide mandate, every NJ municipality must apply it. Once certified through Form CRES, your solar system's added value is excluded from your property assessment. Contact your municipal tax assessor if your assessment incorrectly reflects your solar system's value, citing N.J.S.A. 54:4-3.113.
The federal ITC (Section 25D) expired December 31, 2025 under P.L. 119-21. If your NJ system was completed in 2025, file IRS Form 5695 with your 2025 tax return. NJ has no state income tax credit for residential solar.
